APRU Sustainable Cities and Landscapes Hub//Environmental Initiative Student Travel Awards for Global Engagement

Posted in Uncategorized

APRU (Association of Pacific Rim Universities) Sustainable Cities and Landscapes Hub and the
UO Environmental Initiative are excited to announce the APRU SCL X EI Student Travel Award
for Global Engagement. This student travel award supports five to seven UO undergraduate and
graduate students presenting their work at the 2022 APRU Sustainable Cities and Landscapes
(SCL) Conference in Honolulu, September 6-9, 2022.

APRU SCL Hub is an international core research program led by UO under the auspice of the
Association of Pacific Rim Universities (APRU), a network of 60+ universities around the Pacific
Rim. APRU SCL Hub and EI share guiding principles: the creation of multi-disciplinary solutions
and policy impacts to address the urgency of climate change, environmental justice concerns,
and the needs of vulnerable communities. Both support direct student outcomes and
professional engagement for global sustainability through place-based solutions. Since 2017,
APRU SCL has supported 30+ students attending conferences (Hong Kong, Sydney, and
Auckland) and student engagement activities across the Pacific Rim, including a design field
school, design competitions, and a student symposium.

This year, Awarded students can participate in professional and global engagement
opportunities such as:

● Student Symposium – Students present their research and receive feedback from diverse
faculty and peers across the Pacific Rim
● Working groups – Students explore their interests and work with scholars, professionals,
and students, producing actionable knowledge. APRU SCL working groups are closely aligned with United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and EI Nodes, including
decarbonization, water and sanitation,
● Multi-disciplinary keynote and plenary sessions – Students learn place-based solutions
from eminent international speakers. This year, we partner with other APRU programs,
including Multi-Hazards and Global Health, emphasizing transdisciplinary solutions.
● Mentorship program – Ph.D. students match with scholars with similar research
● Awarded students co-write articles on their global engagement experience that can be
featured in the EI, UO, and APRU communications
