Becoming Heritage: Recognition, Exclusion, and the Politics of Black Cultural Heritage in Colombia
By examining the effects of the declaration of San Basilio de Palenque’s Afro-descendant culture as “Intangible Heritage of Humanity” by UNESCO, Maria Fernanda Escallón’s book project examines how new language and technical vocabularies of cultural heritage recognition entrench existing patterns of discrimination and further marginalize vulnerable Black community members in Colombia.
